This course is a pathway to a career as an external Evaluation Team Leader

Course Summary

This course provides advanced skills, knowledge and tools necessary to lead external evaluations of projects and programs in the humanitarian and development sector.

It is an intense course designed to give students the necessary advanced evaluator skillset to perform evaluations to a high level of technical proficiency.

This course advances the external evaluator skillset by expanding on different and more complex methods and evaluation approaches. The course also has a special focus on framing, tone and designing and communicating high quality findings and recommendations, as well as how to effectively fulfil a quality assurance role on an evaluation.   

This is a highly practical course that involves applying what you learn throughout the course in small teams and individually. 

The learning is delivered in a diverse and psychologically safe environment by a number of senior and highly experienced evaluators with different expertise who are there to build your confidence as an evaluator. 

Students will leave the course with an understanding of how to embed evaluatory learning into client organisations using more advanced techniques and approaches.  

Each day of the course will comprise two stages:

  1. In-course formal learning comprising 4 hours of the course day.
  2. After/before hours independent learning tasks which should take approximately 4 hours each day and can be completed at the start or end of your day depending on your timezone.  

A pre-requisite for this course is the Humanitarian Impact Institute's course: Foundations of Evaluations, or demonstration of equivalent experience to that course standard.

Learning Goal

Students who pass this course will be able to deliver humanitarian and/or development project evaluations with the support of a experienced Team Leader.

  • Evaluating innovation
  • Evaluating localisation 
  • Co-design processes
  • Non-extractive protocols

In addition, you will have a number of skills-based challenges/tasks to complete in between course sessions, which will be assessed and feedback provided. 

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for people who are new to, or have some experience, delivering humanitarian and/or development evaluations as an external evaluator, and who want to gain an advanced skillset to become a Team Leader on project and small program evaluations. 

At the completion of this course, graduates will be able to lead the evaluation of a project or small program in the humanitarian and development sector using a range of methods and approaches. 

Format & Requirements

This is an online course using collaborative video conference software. You will be joining with your video on to enhance communication and you will be undertaking regular writing and analysis tasks. It is therefore highly recommended you join the course using a computer, as a smartphone or tablet will not allow you to perform at your best on this course.

Course Length

5 day course

4 contact hours per day plus 4 non-contact hours per day (8 hours per day total)

The 4 non-contact hours are to complete four offline tasks which will be provided at the end of each day.

Pre-requisites

Fundamentals of Evaluation course. Demonstrated previous experience can substitute for this course through the provision of evidence. Please contact the HII Course Team to request an exception to this pre-requisite course prior to booking.

Passing Grade

To pass this course, students must complete all practical tasks given; attend all sessions and actively participate; and must achieve a score of at least 75% on the final test.

Students who pass the course will receive a certificate from the Humanitarian Impact Institute.

Subsidies Available

A limited number of free and/or subsidised (50% discount) places are available for women from the global south who want to transition into an evaluator role.
